How effective are AA batteries when used a D batteries with an adapter?

My baby is in her swing all the time, she loves it! It costs a fortune in batteries though. I just read about the AA battery adapters that make AA useable as D size. Has anybody ever tried this with rechargable AA's in a baby swing? If so, how did it work out and for how long? I would love to save the $$$ if possible.
