What the heck happened to Claude All�gre?

The Realclimate article is pretty revealing, as are yses of some of his past material. If his work is so flawed, there must be a reason beyond his apparent cross-disciplinary approach. It's interesting that according to Logical Science he once argued for the concept of human-caused greenhouse warming while defending nuclear operators from anti-nuclear sentiment. And he's apparently made at least one politically-charged statement regarding asbestos abatement. Maybe it won't be long before he becomes the next pseudo-Galileo of the denial movement, as other scientists criticize his ertions and creative graphing.
